Concert Notes: Cantigas de Santa Maria

IMG_0574 The Cantigas de Santa Maria, or the Canticles of the Holy Mary, are thirteenth century songs praising the Virgin Mary. They normally use Galician-Portuguese, though they may have been composed closer to Castille. They are related to the other Iberian poetic corpuses: the Cantigas D’Amigo (song of a friend – female voiced) and Cantigas D’Amor.

There are four extant manuscripts of the Cantigas (420 poems in all) and some of them are highly il-lustrated with musicians playing a variety of instruments.

Vox Feminae, Sun. May 13th at 2:30 p.m.
